You are correct that it's extremely difficult for a foreigner to get a long term visa, let alone citizenship, in Japan ... with the one exception being if you marry a nice Japanese girl [You must be logged in to view images. Log in or Register.]

(From what I've heard though, even then it's a giant PITA; Japan is still very xenophobic in a lot of ways.)
