Sounds like you're well versed on everfrost (20 years ago), on P99 you won't run into many people out that way so I would expect to solo until you relocate.

In general there isn't a big population of people grouping and leveling as most people leveling characters at this point in the server are leveling one of the many alts they created and people are typically loading up new characters full of velious loot and soloing all the way up (twinking is a whole other level here compared to what you might remember of live).

To the extent that people are grouping there is typically only 1-2 zones for any given level range that people go to group but like you mentioned shaman is good for any type of gameplay. I would just expect it to be more solo heavy than what your past experiences were.

I personally would recommend rolling Ogre over Barbarian, the frontal stun immunity to me is the best racial ability in the game, the starting zone is more friendly for connecting to the populus, and Barbarian night vision is rough to put it mildly. My very first toon was a barbarian shaman back on live and I'm happy I rolled an Ogre shaman on P99.

There are many guilds to choose from, I would recommend saving that decision until you roll your toon and start interacting with the player base. Some are more focused on leveling, some on community, some on raiding, theres a place for everyone.
