But most Barbarians just stand around the nearest body of water, fishing and drinking beer. The most laid back activity on Norrath. Doesn't exactly scream fiery and hot tempered to me.

Plain-jane humans can be good (paladins) or evil (shadowknights), and so can smarty-pants Erudites. Barbarians should have the same opportunities, especially considering that they practically border Qeynos. Erudin is just a short boat ride away too. Plenty of possibilities for Barbarians to pick up the knack of Paladinizing from the nearest neighbors.

On that topic, I always found it slightly weird that Erudites can be Paladins. Why?

It always felt like the original devs decided that Erudites were too magicky for something as base and crude as physical combat, but then realized that the coneheaded boys needed some sort of tank to survive as a race and gave them knights out of pity. High elves got put in the same boat, only they didn't even get shadowknights out of it, just paladins.

Two smart races too proud to pick up a simple rock and smash their enemies in the face with it.

High elves make sense as paladins though. Especially when considering the type of fantasy that EQ is based on.

What point are you trying to make? Skalds were scandinavian/nordic. Norrathian bards are clearly inspired by celtic/gaelic cultures.
Exactly. Barbarians are primarily Scottish inspired, ie fit well into celtic/gaelic tropes
excellent point, otoh...

Honestly Bard feels like one of those classes that no p99 forum poster should have access to, not even on their best birthday.

But sure give the barbies Paladins if you want, their hell has already frozen over. Just don't ever give gnomies or haffers anything and you're cool.
