Today, I think, perhaps, I would say Bernie Sanders is in that tradition still. Just barely. Very softcore. In the US. That is about it, imho. Mid 20th century leftism is like a hair metal band no one ever feels nostalgic about. It is truly a dead political movement, if we use the 20th century as our measure for defining it.



Most people are not interested in making sure their idea-structure is consistent, or coherent. Liberalism and Neo-liberalism dominates the space, not because Leftism won, but because Leftism lost, is gone, and liberalism is what won.


The US boasts two examples of extremely liberal law. Other countries think we are nuts to let stuff loose how we do.

1. Our free speech laws
2. Our 2nd Amendment

When it comes to another concern of the Right, property rights, the US ranks a respectable 13th:

This is a bit of a cryptic civil war we are engaged in. Our system, is pretty set in stone. And on many issues we are all proud of the liberality of these laws. But this strange reactionary movement made "liberal" a bad word b/c US politics 60's-70's. In reality, liberalism would support busing, but that is the extent of their "leftism."



In a nutshell, liberalism in the US is leftism that is now vestigial in terms of aim, and that loves the free market. And a twist! That is what *used* to be called conservative before the party shifted South and more focused on a religious pitch deck.



So today, we have people who would have been called typical East Coast conservatives, being called Leftists, when they are in fact mostly neo-liberals, which real Leftists hate, and the people calling these folks Leftists, are enthusiasts for the most liberal gun and free speech laws in the world. But liberals are stupid.
