You'd probably do best joining a guild maybe with people you enjoy during your leveling up process. And depending on what you want to do mid-end game, to choose another guild then, or stay with your lower level guild.
As far as pet taunt works, there is a search feature in the forums that can help you out with an arsenal of information for any questions you may have. More specifically, taunt as I understand it is not functioning 100% as it should, and as a result the pet owner can pull aggro pretty quickly.
