in fact, if you cannot guarantee your own sovereignty, the UN will not recognize your statehood. This is one of the UN's statehood requirements.

Exactly. So much granular thinking here ‘this one thing is the magic solution’ when clearly things are more complicated than that.

We can see from case studies that an army is useful, but as you say it is no guarantee. Both Ukraine now and the American Independence would be nowhere without the diplomatic support of outside super powers (the West in the first instance, imperial France in the second).

On a state/national level if America were to collapse (it won’t - some of the institutions are too powerful to allow full on collapse) whoever comes put on top won’t be some local farmer with a gun it will be whoever can levy the best support from outside forces (Nato, China, etc).
