Agreed. The term in that context has no merit, and only gets used as a 'clever' form of plausible deniability of using a slur.

Fag is fine used in two situations - in reference to a cigarette (e.g. when borrowing a smoke "Can I bum a fag, mate?"), but even then only for someone who this is an everyday part of their dialect - or in reference to the the 'fagging' social systems established at fancy British public / boarding schools.

For anyone who isn't aware of this - which I suppose may be many readers as the board is US centred - An older boy would take a younger boy under their wing.
