There's no point in having naming rules if they aren't enforced.
Not true. People ... especially new people picking their first character's name ... believe the rules will be enforced, so it makes them pick good names.

Of course, then they get in the game, and realize that part of the PnP is ... not quite honest ... but it's been this way forever. I think the staff figures "if we cast a wide net, we can remove any flagrantly bad name", whereas if they tried to make the PnP match reality, some truly bad names might slip through.

The fundamental problem is that there is very little motivation to volunteer to be a GM here, and what few saints of human beings we do have are busy with stuff like resolving camp disputes between 40-year-old man-children. There was even a movement to "crowdsource" enforcement a few years back (players petitioned names that violated the policy en masse) ... and the staff told them to knock it off, presumably because they didn't have the bandwidth to handle it.

I suspect, once upon a time when they wrote the policy, the staff wanted classic names ... because they wanted classic everything here. But over time, as they've allowed things like pet windows, they've given up any hope of classic names (ie. enforcing their own PnP) ... because it just can't be done with their volunteer limitations.

What's more important?

Retreiving a lost item for someone or forcing a player to rename his 'Dogfart' character?

ROFL no, It's not a power trip just because you don't agree. Rules exist for a reason. I was doing the job of simply enforcing the naming rules, and yes, I did enjoy taking dumbf@#k names that didn't belong in Norrath out of the gaming world. I enjoyed it just as much as those same dumbf@#k players who thought it was funny to name themselves "Hittinmymeat". Follow the rules, and there's no need to get your name nerfed. It's that simple.

After over 20 years of playing MMOs, I agree with the poster above that suggested that no one should be allowed to name themselves. ...Because clearly after 2 decades of watching people name their characters f@#ked-up names, too many just have no idea how to RESPECT the world they are in or the players who have to see their idiotic names floating over their heads. I think everyone should be forced into auto-generated names (in one way or another, like you get some options, etc) and if you want a custom name, you petition a GM for it and pay a fee for the service. This would solve the majority of all naming issues so that GMs can focus on other matters rather than babysit childish players who can't be mature enough to properly name themselves. Seeing everyone with a barf of vowel generic fantasy name would ruin my immersion by making me think ive accidentally loaded a singleplayer game instead of everquest

I picked a fantasy name, even went out of my way to try to think of something elf-like for high elf race, whatever the hell that is

Took a long ass time. Probably woulda been easier to just go with milfslayer or somethin
