To this I say “kinda”. I was an engineer at Command Fleet Activities Yokosuka base for 6 years.

It’s more like the US exploits Japan allowing us to have multiple military bases on their land to keep pressure on China. We don’t give two shits about protecting them. Tip of the spear, not tip of the shield. And what we’ve done to Okinawa is fucking tragic. One of the nicest places and people on earth, and we’ve essentially turned their whole main island into a giant military base. The locals try to push back, but always fail.

And we get to use their government subsidized labor for a large portion of the maintenance we do. If it’s not nuclear or any other sensitive system, chances are it’s a Japanese guy turning the wrench.

The Japanese nationalist government would love nothing more than to kick us out and rebuild their military. But China also hates the fuck out of Japan for the vast number of atrocities they committed in WWII, so if the US left I wouldn’t be surprised if China came in for revenge.

So yeah, protection is a side affect of our main reason being there. It’s not some noble cause.
We exploit them? They were committing genocide across the eastern hemisphere prior to being defeated

You have an interesting interpretation of history. Regardless, we do defend them and many others. In any case, an insolvent US collapses the global economy. What debt to GDP ratio scares you? 200%?

There's a rebellious side of me that actually really likes what he's doing. He didn't run a ponzi scheme and escape, he's taking advantage of the overpriced higher education racket and screwing over the system.

It's weird that a part of me really likes it.

I absolutely agree they committed mass genocide across the east. I literally put that into my post. I’ve been to Korea and seen and heard stories about what they did there and I would never even begin to defend it. That’s not the point I was trying to make though.

I’m just simply giving my observations about the US’s current situation in Japan. You said we’re there to protect them, I said it’s not that simple.

I said we exploit the fact they allow us to be there. Different to exploiting the peoples themselves. The US (and pretty much every major government) has a habit of taking a mile when offered and inch. Our current position in Japan is no different.

The amount of service members stationed, the number and sizes of bases, the type of maintenance and work that is allowed to be carried out. All of these things are being constantly pushed and expanded, with promises that “this is the last time” being constantly broken.

This is the US military we’re talking about here. Does any of this actually surprise you?

No one’s yet mentioned the fact that many, many jobs that “require” a college degree, still end up having their employees learn the bulk of their job function EXCLUSIVELY during training. Now this isn’t all jobs, for example extremely specialized jobs like engineering

Speaking from my own field, the only part of behavioral health I see people actively using knowledge from their degree is psychiatry or nurse practitioner, prescribing meds. The rest is experienced based. MAYBE outpatient counseling, depending on what modality is being used

Yet the legal scam that is college continues not only unabated, but even more encouraged now that it got a mini-subsidy at the expense of the working class

You’re expressing anarchist sentiments and I just wanted you to know we are recruiting

Also, Junji Ito makes great horror manga. Or Ito Junji I forget which way Japanese names go all the time despite having Japanese family members
