The potato chip was invented out of spite.

A customer had complained that his fried potatoes were cut too thick, so Crum -- by many accounts a tad ornery -- deep fried a new batch, cut paper thin, to a crisp.

According to the Snack Food Association, "what was intended as a stunt turned into an instant hit." The picky customer and his friends loved Crum's creation. Or so the story goes.

So it is satan's snack food.
