If you are using Virtual Midi Synth, it has a built in mixer and you should be able to adjust each instrument's volume to whatever you like.

But the thing that makes the biggest difference for me is having both an awe32 soundfont and synthusr.sf2 both loaded in virtual midi synth. The awe32 rom should be at the top of the load list and synthusr.sf2 next. You can also add synthusr2.sf2 which has some higher quality instruments mixed in to the bottom of the soundfont list in virtual midi synth. Just depends on the flavor of classic sounds that you are looking for. If you are doing all that correctly already then don't know what other advice to give you.

One more idea though...You should be able to compare the sound you are getting to some YouTube recordings. Look up awe32 everquest. Yours should sound close or exact after properly set up. If it doesn't then you are probably still not set up correctly. Or even just look up videos to see if those are closer to the sound you remember or not really.
