I'm also from the wrong side of the pond. From what I understand the president isn't a representative of the people. He (microaggression, sorry) is a representative of the 50ish states acting as a coalition of nations that make up the USA. I suppose the president is more like a senior trade ambassador for the EU.

As such, despite the problems with the electoral college, I don't think having a nationwide popularity contest would be a fair reflection of who should fulfil the role. Perhaps a better way would be to have a popularity contest for each state as a whole, and use that to decide which candidate each state votes for.

Bill Clinton played the Sax while wearing cool guy shades.
Bush went after 'terrrists'
Obama was 'change' we can believe in, also 'hope'
Trump was a wild card and household name
Biden ??

edit: Biden drove around a closed area with Jay Leno in a classic Corvette Singray. That has to count for something i guess
