Azeth & Yendor did not see the word "moves" in the subject line of this thread and were disappointed after they clicked on it. [You must be logged in to view images. Log in or Register.]

This article gave me a very different view of Eve Online. Although I've never played, I considered it many times. I didn't know the economy there was so player driven.

It's pretty much entertaining for a few years, then the novelty wears off. (Ok I realize this is pretty much all you can ask of most games, but I'm putting this out there, having been a CEO and alliance leader for 3-4 years before quitting). EVE combat just isn't fun, even 0.0 wars and piracy. EVE economy isn't that fun. The lack of avatars starts to take its toll on your psyche.

The best thing about it is the player corporations in which you'll meet some of the most focused and dedicated comrades you may ever find in any game, because the community is generally superior to most any other game you'll find. And I believe that unconsentual pvp should be a major tenet to any mmo.

But in the end, it will disappoint you. The skill system is irl-time-based, not skill based. It's starting to show major weaknesses. Established players will have a gargantuan advantage over you that you might never overcome, even given loads of talent and aggressive play style. The combat is just plain boring and purely numbers-based with few options for mixing up roles. The politics are a vomitous mass of regurgitated diarrhea because the people in charge of various factions are usually mouthbreathers with a lot of time on their hands.

I would strongly counsel to wait for the next big thing.

Scamming banks and real-time insurmountable advantages?

Sounds just like real corporate life.

Interesting read on one of the biggest game-world upsets in Eve's history. It really gives a feel for some of the player-driven dynamics of the world and how much the "anything goes" policy applies.

Kinda long, but worth it imo.

"He spent months running the "EVE Intergalactic Bank (EIB)." This offered loans for start-up EVE corporations and miners who wanted to buy tools, with interest rates and repayment plans and yes, we're still talking about a game people apparently play for fun."

cracks me up lol

I like EVE, I still play it and all but yeah sometimes I sit back and think... why am I doing this???

So, when he ran this bank thing, what exactly drove players to actually pay him back instead of going HAHA SCREW YOU after getting the money?

^ this. to even expound on that thought Rogean, i'm wholey curious as to what game mechanics keep this corporation system in place. Seems like the whole scheme is very much glued together by the time/effort spent by a select few people outside the actual game.

You are mistaking EVE Online for a game made in 1999. There are very robust and creative mechanics and features in place to support a host of things you may be unfamiliar with, from player-made political entities including nation-states complete with infrastructure to massive ship construction taking months in time requiring the resources of GROUPS of ALLIANCES. For instance, there are perhaps barely just enough players on P99 to construct a Titan-class capital ship... within a year.
