Probably been awhile since you've seen that flick--but what happened in the scene was the plane suffered damage to its electrical systems in an earlier missile attack which disabled the bomb bay door motors. Nobody noticed that particular damage due to other more pressing problems until the crew tried (and failed) to open the doors as their attack run commenced. The Major frantically crawled into the bomb bay and on top of the bomb so as to reach and repair the damaged area. Once he succeeded and the bay doors opened he was left trapped with no way out, mere seconds from release, and dropped with the bomb he was sitting on. No stupidity present--the character was portrayed as having selflessly sacrificed himself for his mission. The entire aircrew played their roles totally straight in (deliberate) contrast with the rest of the film being a somewhat absurd comedy.

I contrast that with a TV flick called "By Dawn's Early Light" which also has a B-52 crew as characters. Opposite to the earlier film, in this one the U.S. actually is subjected to nuclear attack, but the B-52 crew in this film wusses out (in spite of their friends and families mostly being dead) and refuses to conduct their nuclear counterattack mission, instead choosing to go rogue. You don't want crews like that in a shooting war.
