EQ has no competitive raiding, this post is useless. EQ is a 10 sec FTE and thats it, no skill involved and generally bosses zerg'd down in less then 2 mins. You can't even at all compare EQ and WoW raiding scene. WoW was instanced, a guild could attempt heroic/mythic(whatever they call the highest difficulty), 100s of times to get it down. EQ if you wipe, chance are the next guild is getting the kill moment agro is reset. But again its zerg'd down by 80-150 members.

You gotta admit it’s a very unique and competitive experience though. Wow has some more difficult encounters, sure, but I’ve never played another MMO with the level of competition between guilds as p99.

Where exactly is the competition when you can just try to beat an encounter over and over in your own instance? You just need to gather as many of your regular neck beards as possible and rinse repeat until guild leader decides to farm something else?

Compare that to X guilds looking to get same same target(s) in a non instanced world.

I'll pick EQ any day, thank you very much

I’m level 51 now. When do I start getting showered in raid loot?

Its server first ranks. So many push for server first, USA first, or even world first. Tons of tracking websites and achievements to show off.

Wow is what 10/20 man raids? EQ takes 80 neck beards(truly takes less but show how many guilds do it with less then 80? So I don't understand your first statement at all.

On WoW the difference between a top raider and a casual raider is MASSIVE -- a casual raider will never even come close to having the same items as an end-game raider.

On P99 however, I inspect a player from Seal Team and I inspect a player from a random Federation guild, and their items are generally identical (in fact I have friends in Seal Team who have worse gear than me and I barely even raid).

Can someone explain to me why players get so heated over who gets to go first? I see these 18 hour days that my friends in ST put in, and I don't envy them. Especially when I know my more casual friends will likely end up with the same exact items without putting in any where near as much effort or work.
You mean it doesn't have everything to do with the items? People just enjoy chasing them and depriving others of getting them too? Surely, you can't be describing the cherub like nature of competitive vanilla classic EQ raiding...

EQ is all about drama. Interpersonal drama. Interguild drama. Intraguild drama. In-group drama. Loot drama. Guild bank drama. Tunnel pricing drama. Camp drama. Drama, drama, drama. Remember how LoS back in the day did a version of the Turner TV network slogan on their website, "We Know Drama"?

WoW can mask the grind with all the shiny mechanics and QoL they want but at the end of the day you're still on an MMO grind treadmill. The human drama element is what keeps EQ interesting after the grinding and the drops are looted and accounted for.

Sixteen hour windows suck and no person should consent to socking them like this, but when you do sock it and one guild beats the other....those are real feelings. Its not about the encounters themselves, its about the fact that in a game with such limited resources and such high demand every little win or loss from that skeleton with a cracked staff to losing a CoF dragon spawn feels like something REAL was on the table.

Its fun to get a target for the first time with your crew, more fun when you are the first to do it in some fashion, but no modern games can emulate the real stakes people feel when they play this obscure little piece of history. The value of that obviously persists for players 20 years later and counting.
