I thought most corona transmission was either contact, or aerosol (ie droplets of water/mucus in the air containing coronavirus). The mask doesn't need to be small enough to catch a single coronavirus, it needs to be able to catch those moisture droplets in the air.

The actual evidence says mask and social distancing work. There's a reason why the only countries with poor mask-wearing and social distancing compliance are the ones with dramatically higher incidence of covid
