It did great in the 9th century when Pope Leo needed them for protection against attacks.

The city is a glorified tourist trap today, so they opened it all up.

This is why you patrol the wall.

You know, for the rare occurrence when the cartel uses a black powder cannon to shoot a hole in your wall.

While the rest of the wall is nice and secure, keeping out the 99.9% of the others.
