Because the staff here is kind, and even if you gave COMPLETELY the wrong item, like say a Fungi Tunic, odds are they would still return it to you.

What very likely happened is that you were screwed not by P99, but by EverQuest itself. The original EQ developers added multiple items with the same name, for instance:

http://wiki.project1999.com/Stein_(of_Water)

or very similar items:
http://wiki.project1999.com/Torch
http://wiki.project1999.com/A_Torch

Why? Who knows, but to be certain that you have the right item you have to use the (otherwise almost useless) Identify spell. The correct item will Identify as "Torch of Fire" (or whatever item/element is appropriate).

This happens so freaking much. Mostly people handing in the non-lore shovel.
