they are situational. most solo classes most of the time want the long lasting (3 min) paralyzing earth.
plain root is only 30 mana to cast, which is basically mana free. if all you need is to park the mob for a few seconds while someone gets aggro then this is fine.
the others are hybrids of duration, casting time, and mana cost. there was some speculation on live about some being more resilient to dd breaks, but it doesn't seem to be the case on p99 even it was the case, which I doubt, on live.
tldr, you probably want to use the longest duration one --- which is paralyzing earth once you can cast it.
