SMS Verification
Is there a way around using a phone number for SMS Verification? My concern is I use a work number and could very well lost that number eventually.
Is there a service where I can essentially have a phone number attached to an email and send/receive texts that way? Does this make sense?

Whichever route you go, make sure that once you sync it, you don’t lose that number. There’s no way to change it once it’s done.

If you have a gmail account and a landline or cellphone, you can get a google voice number (voice.google.com) which will let you forward texts/call to your gmail address.
Initially you will need to use your landline or cell number to verify your google voice number, but once it is verified you will never need that number again, and can turn off forwarding to that number.

For verification you use an existing phone number (example: 222-222-2222). Your google voice number will forward calls/texts for your google voice number (111-111-1111) to your existing phone number (222-222-2222). You can, however, turn off this forwarding, and instead have them forward to your gmail or hangouts. You never get messages from your existing phone number (222-222-2222) to your google voice account.
