i can't imagine it's to hard to get a decent salary over there. I'm not discounting my friends intelligence or his degrees, just saying it seems like if you have good work ethic and didn't settle you could do alright, much better than 60k per year.
Depends where the booms are.

If you good at your trade you can get 120-150k a year in Melbourne as sparkie (electrician), chippy (carpenter), or concreter.

90k a year here is an averagish salary for the non retarded working class.

But if you're a sales rep etc etc you're down in the 45-50k range.

Most starting postions out of college/uni would start 50-70k range and work up from there. If you have a decent uni degree you should be 100k+ within 5 years of graduating. (I.e not an art degree)

Nurses down here get goooooood money....esp if you get a few more tickets and become an advanced nurse....easy 120k a year as a friggen nurse a few years out of graduations, plus most of them are government jobs so you get all the extras with them. Only problem is you need to do work out in Rural towns for awhile to get trained up before you get positions in inner cities.

A draftie for example after 4-5 years experience is already on 80k-90k a year...even more for mechanical/electrical...and you can finish a degree to get a job in these sectors in 18 months.

Unless you're stupid, uneducated or just lazy... it's hard to be poor here.
