Eh, I agree EQ PvP isn't great, but this is wrong. Catching people unaware or off-guard is the essence of skill in PvP. Deception or recon is the essence of war between closely matched opponents.

Without deception or the ability to throw people off guard, it comes down to who has faster/stronger brute force. And that's definitely not skill.

Not that my opinion matters in any way but I felt like mentioning that I had a blast on sullon zek----for a while.

I created a druid (the first druid I had ever played) about a week after the server opened and it was some of the best fun I ever had in EQ. The fun lasted for a few months and then it went downhill for me.

My problem is that I was, and am, what I believe is now refered to as a "scrub". That is, I don't usually level really quickly and don't really have time for raiding on a regular basis. So after a while I had fallen too far behind the pack in levels and after a while longer the raid loot on other players was becoming much more common. I was out-leveled and out-geared and at that point I was just a moving target for other players.

Even then there was a certain amount of fun in playing the hide-and-seek survival game, feeling like a hunted animal just trying to stay alive. But you can only do that so long before the feeling that there is no future in it catches up to you.

So I would be interested in a classic PvP server but probably wouldn't play on it unless there some non-classic elements to it. Like a lower level cap maybe or removing raid content so the, as you all say, "poopsockers" wouldn't have such a ridiculous advantage.

Or maybe if item loot was a part of it and there was some mechanic to prevent people from bagging their gear if they know they are going to die (like no un-equiping items for x amount of time afer being attacked by another player). That would make people think twice about dumping high end equipment on low level twinks.

I'm sure someone will revile me with a variety of creative insults now. Whatver, this is just my opinion. PvP can be a lot of fun. Being a hunted animal in PvP can even be sort of fun. But knowing that you will always be the hunted animal with no hope of any other future sucks the fun out of it afte a while.

Going red is worthless because you can no longer be buffed/healed by blues. If you could, then I would go red.

PVP is very nearly the antithesis of what EQ and multiplayer fantasy MMORPG is all about. Why create such a rich world when all of it becomes inconsequential in light of one antisocial sadist with a gleam in his eye? Why even play PVP in an environment that isn't designed for it?

I can't like it and can't understand the urge to do it, but that doesn't make me any less of a man. Comments like "man up and go red" would be laughable if they weren't so indicative of the a certain lack of maturity that is of course prevalent among the young but all too common in others.

One line of rebuttal to my commentary would be to tell me to lighten up, because it's just a game. So it is, but I enjoy games of imagination, wonder and challenge, not games of brutality and insensitivity.

I'll be very happy to see a red99 come into being, so as not have to deal with this kind of stuff. Track record for these types of servers isn't good though. No small wonder.

How does getting attacked by an "antisocial sadist" cause the design to become inconsequential? I would argue the game becomes bland and the wonder diminishes when the winners are those who can more effectively eliminate competition through use of the /petition command as opposed to in-game ability. Survival of the fittest? Ha.

How does PvP detract from the imagination and wonder of the world? You speak of challenge but you argue for less challenge. You call it brutal and insensitive; I call it real and competitive, and I rejoice in the ability to decide my own fate instead of being confined within an arbitrary set of rules that remove the challenge and competitiveness of the game. Win or lose, my fate is decided by my own ability.

Its about Class, MR, Gear, Level and Opportunity>skill more times then not.
There are many aspects to skill. But thanks for breaking it down for everyone. Would you like to hear my thoughts on being a successful raider? Hit attack, Stand where you're told.

Seriously though... Skill can be many things.

-Knowing when to pick fights or to run from fights
-Knowing who to pick fights with
-Knowledge of your own abilities and how they interact with other players in a given situation
-Your ability to quickly determine which ability to use.
-Positional awareness
-Knowledge and use of game mechanics
-Preparedness (gear sets, pots, pumice, buffs and buffslot readiness)
-Gear

All the gear in the world won't save you as a warrior if you cannot hit another melee jousting you.
