Hrm. The only thing I can think of is it's unhappy about your UI for some reason. Try renaming the eqclient.ini file in your EQ directory (just add .old to the end of it or something). It should rebuild the file the next time you launch the game (you'll have to reset a few things like your windows positions and resolution settings).
Beyond that - can you interact with the chatbox with the mouse? I.E. changing the hitmodes filter or creating a new chat window? If you don't click in the chat window, your keyboard input (movement, hotkeys, etc) is ok?
What exactly is the crash condition? Does the game just lock up or does it actually exit to desktop with an error / complain about "not responding"?
