First off, do all of the above. Great advice for staring Iksars. But since no one else has mentioned it:

As an Iksar, hit Forage every time it refreshes. The vast majority of the time it works, you'll get food. If you're not sure how to do that, hit Alt+M, go to the second tab and click one of the buttons. Forage will be an option that pops up. Just drag it to your hotbar and enjoy.
