There is no way short of locking someone in a cage to keep them from getting around any attempt to block them from spamming your servers. It isn't possible to sostop them, you can only discourage the less intent ones. Your ip will change if you disconnect your router for a few hours or if you call your is and request an ip refresh. You can change your mac address for free with a computer program or for $10 with a new network interface card. You can change you machine id by using a direct computer. I know this and I am a basic level user not a system admin or it professional... YouTube and reddit can help you get around just about anything

There's other ways to detect spammers besides just their IP.

Not really. It takes all of ten seconds for me to type /ignore iillililillililliliggggqqgqgqgqg or whatever, and if you're bad at distinguishing your Is from your Ls you can always just copy the name from your logs which shouldn't take more than 15 seconds. I mean I exert more effort doing pretty much anything else in EQ, and sometimes the spam is kinda funny so I get a laugh out of it at least.

This forum has a sub-culture/forum known as Rants and Flames, and sometimes people that frequent that forum act the same outside of it as they do inside it. If you're not familiar with that sub-culture it can seem like a bunch of assholes attacking you for nothing ... which it is ... but once you get used to it you realize that it's only because their default response is "hostile", and it has nothing to do with you doing anything wrong.

I imagine they look for keywords on a special list whenever anyone creates a new character, and they pounce unless your name is something fantasy-like (eg. Feroicockitam). Now if only they would update that list with the 200 other most popular words that don't belong in character names ...
