For those that remember, the very early days of rallos zek were very heavy on roleplay going hand in hand on who you grouped with or attacked. A lot of that fell by the wayside as time goes on, just as it has here on red99. Has more to do with what happens to servers as they age more than anything. Race to the bottom with only the slime left on top, after they have "griefed" off everyone else for the "lulz"
But yes there are specialized toons made around a concept, and then go out into the world and fight for their faction/homeland, whatever. Most def pvp adds to RP.
My dream server? a hybrid of Firiona vie and Sullon zek servers.

The reason early Zek had a feeling of role playing for you wasn't because of the player base or time period. It would happen with any new game where there are not prior relationships among players. When a group of people are new in any setting and pitted against people they find the first reason to ostracize others for survival. You pick out the race that is different and everyone of the same race gangs up. It is an easy way to build a sense of team work on the spot when no prior knowledge of the players exist.
Later as relationships, reputation, and greed for pixels build the player races mean nothing and people find ways to segregate themselves into groups by common long term goals.
Giving the server credit for having a mature player base or the game creators for creating a game with this amazing phenomenon is delusional and just you hyping up a game you enjoyed a long time ago.
