The other day I saw a paladin tanking mobs with a mage damage shield and potion on.


Using Damage Shields under this bug is a clear exploit; the lowered defence skill increases the mobs hit rate, and as such the damage taken from damage shield.

Taking extra hits through lowered defence is part of the ranger niche, and knights are encroaching!
