I used to listen to a lot of Scandinavian metal like In Flames, Soilwork, At the Gates, Children of Bodom, The Haunted, Opeth, etc. In Flames is radio rock now, Soilwork is still putting out good music, Opeth is prog rock now but still good. Most of the bands listed have been around since the late 80's so it's hard to not evolve your sound when you've been around that long. Most metal I listen to these days is progressive/jazz influenced stuff thats instrumental. Can't really get into the metal screaming anymore.

Plini, Sithu Aye, Chon, Widek, Jakub Zytecki, and Polyphia make some pretty good music. Oh yea and Intervals, Animals as Leaders are also sweet. Periphery is good, except their singer is terrible. If you can find the instrumental versions of their songs on youtube I'd recommend that.

Literally only 1 of those bands was around in the late 80s [You must be logged in to view images. Log in or Register.] And that was Opeth before they were Opeth.

A lot of bands don't evolve at all and in a lot of cases that's a bad thing. I don't like Opeth's new output. I find it boring and lifeless. They had an earlier stab at prog rock with Damnation and that was one of their best. I don't know why I don't like their new stuff but still good that they changed because it was quite clear they were stagnating.

But anyway.... change is good regardless.

I'll check out some of the names you mentioned sometimes. Prog metal is a subgenre I sleep on.

Bah whatever, needless to say they've all been around for 20+ years, Lol.

I like the new Opeth because I like true prog rock bands like Yes, ELP, King Crimson, The Flower Kings, etc. There are a couple songs on the past few albums I didn't care for though. That hadn't been the case with their metal albums, which I loved every song. I absolutely loved Opeth from My Arms, Your Hearse to Watershed.

Ok I got a good laugh out of that one. I'll just listen to some Bloodbath albums and pretend it's new Opeth going for a simple sound.

i'm just gonna put some Deafheaven in here, because black metal with dem feels is best black metal

https://youtu.be/uC4374TkNYo?t=2m53s

also pretty good idea to keep what's good about black metal (the deeply depressive yet brutal wall of blast beat/guitars) and drop the dumb stuff, like making a cover with a black and white photo of a dead tree with the name of the band with an undecipherable font. or the ridiculous amount of make up used in black metal. seriously, some of these guys put more make up than fucking lady gaga.

i mean look at the cover of their best album:

it's a great troll toward the folklore of black metal if you think about it.. i love it [You must be logged in to view images. Log in or Register.]
