To go a little further into a dead issue no one cares about, I believe at that time we were binding hotkeys to mouse wheel rolls. Only worked for particular mice, but it was absolutely manual input (unlike your "experiment") that performed similarly to autofire. Like it or not, TMO always excelled at pushing tactics to their furthest legal limits.  
 
Also, I think we decided FTE came down to latency and physical proximity to the server. Which would explain why your autofire malfunctioned. An active player on a good connection could reliably beat an autofire bot pretty often which.. we were pretty sure was a good portion of Rampage / IB FTEs btw.
