It equates to over 55k a year when adjusted for hours worked and time off.

Its fucking good money.
The province I am in pays our teachers a top end of $97,000 for duel degree (i.e., B.Ed, B.Sc.) but only have about 8 weeks off in summer and 2ish for December. So if you don't like your salary and your degree is recognized take a look at some other countries.

97k Canadian about 32 dollars USD I think. [You must be logged in to view images. Log in or Register.]

And I wasn't making the comment that 40k is shit money, it was more the tone of Rags post that I was referring to. And also they do make shit money for the job they do, the skills and education required to be a good teacher is far more than jobs that pay double and even triple in some cases. I have an aunt who has her masters, was nominated for teacher of the year in the state she taught in, had 25+ years of tenure, etc. She made a comfortable living, in the low 70s but we're hiring mid level java programmers and systems engineers for more than that where I work.

Also you can't just "adjust for hours worked", because that implies you can work another job during the 3 months you have off at the same rate which is very rarely the case.

Man I thought some of you guys were older and had adult jobs.

Thinking 40k is good money... Must be nice being single and having no dependents. Or a mortgage.

FYI lots of teachers start out at 28-35k, and rhe concept of them working less than 40hrs a week is a joke. Try 50-55 easy. Even summers you're busy for 2-4 weeks prepping and closing up shop, going to meetings, etc.

starting at 28k? lol do you live in India or something?

Starting teacher salaries range from $45,530 (bachelor's degree, no prior teaching experience) to $74,796 (bachelor's degree, master's degree plus 30 credits, 7.5+ years teaching experience). Teachers who have a master's degree but no teaching experience will start at $51,425 - NYC

i dont think anyone is trying to say being a public school teacher is glamorous but even the bottom end of their salaries is a perfectly livable income in most major US cities if you live within your means ex: using condoms and renting. but ya it's pretty common knowledge if you're going into a chem physics etc major that you will be a public school teacher unless you go to school longer than 4-6 years.

That is kinda the point though. If you follow through with a masters right away you're gonna be a 24-26 year old with 100k+ in student loan debt minimum (probably closer to 200k) making 51k a year when some knucklehead who went to ITT technical institute can get an entry level PHP programming job for more with a 2 year degree.
