I was always under the impression that an agnostic is not opposed to the idea of a god or an afterlife, but has just not been convinced that anyone knows whether that is true or not.

Atheism/Theism is about what you believe - Gnosticism/Agnosticism is about what you KNOW. So most Atheists are Agnostic Atheists, not 100% sure but on the side of not believing, whereas an Gnostic Atheist says positively God Does Not Exist. Similar there can be Gnostic and Agnostic Theists. So when you say you're agnostic, all you're saying is you don't know, not where you're leaning.

Most people don't understand the nomenclature well enough to define themselves that way. I think anyone who says they believe in a God and who, when asked why, says it's because they do not know the answer but have faith, is an agnostic theist. And there were a few people like that in college.

Yeah, but that's not very open-minded liberal thought.
The religion of peace, where women can't vote and are murdered for going to school, are on the receiving end of honor killings, forced to walk out the door strapped with explosives, liberals have not much to say about that except to teach how positive the religion of peace is. Why is that? Oh yeah, because people that say such things wind up a target of it, and it's safer to take shots at the groups that will do nothing to you.
