What you're talking about is robotic automatons.

The development of truly sentient artificial intelligence that could improve itself would quickly usher in a technological singularity, and humanity as we know it would cease to exist, as everything we know would be revolutionized.

It depends on what you define as AI.. if you define AI as only an operating system with a consciousness then yes.

But the truth is, heh.. if you look at humanity... the definition of intelligence is relative.

So a robot able to learn how to complete a task or job, is considered AI.

On the subject of an operating system with a consciousness?

I believe what you would get is precisely the end of the movie 'Her'

 
a sudden exodus of our grain of sand sized planet of all Ai, why stay here if you can explore the universe unharmed.


You'll end up, the same as you were before you started. So Ai in that sense, is a paradox, you cannot create it without it resetting itself
