Though, the truth is we spend a lot more than 16% of our budget on defense, the numbers are really more like 19-22% but aside from that, the affects that the military spending has on all aspects of life, non military, are huge. The borrowing in order to spend so much on military, that affects interest rates for everyone, so YOU pay more because of it. The after effects of war on vets that we spend (not nearly enough) 4% of the budget on.

It really comes down to 30+% of our budget is dedicated to defense spending in one way or another.
