Even without 100-300k in gear and spells (i.e. no epic, malo, torpor, fungi, JBB) shamans are hands down one of the strongest classes in the game.
Their base spell set (easy to acquire stuff) alone put them in a league of their own. Slow is just sickeningly powerful. Canni mechanic gives them so much usable mana. Druids got better with Velious but they still suffer from non-specialist syndrome. Healing power can't compete with cleric cheal or shaman (not even counting torpor) single target heal + the effect of slow on damage intake. They don't complement a group with a cleric already in it as well as a shaman. For healing, Druid + shaman works but 2 shamans or shaman/cleric would do better for raw healing. Anywhere Druids can charm they will do fantastic dps. Their buffs are very nice. Their nukes are alright. Ports and evacs are clutch.

nah I have leveled 2 shamans to 60 - without at least the epic 50+ they are pretty weak.
They are a fine 4rth or 5th group member, but without at least the epic they are missing out on the real power that a shaman is, and thats a root rotting monster. As for druids on blue I think they are retarded but on red they are as powerful as a shaman is on blue. They are pure death. anything that gets near them is destroyed they are monsters in groups becuse they can pick up reps they are beasts in pvp they are heals they are playable dragons.

He's right about druids on red, a fine pvp class that thrives.

druids are a convenience machine - buffs, ports, sow, etc. they have little combat value. They root rot significantly worse than sham/necro and quad kite slightly worse than wizards. They charm slightly better than enchanters (thanks to escape abilities) but have a much narrower spectrum of targets. Druids have almost no place in end game.
Shamans are the hardcore class of the game. They are REQUIRED to do anything serious thanks to their slows. They are also one of the best classes at soloing (but ramp to that point very poorly. JBB and canni are the only real starting points). tldr; druid is probably a better starting class because shamans are actually somewhat gear dependent as a caster (they want HP regen and dmg clickies). Druid can easily solo to lvl 50 without equipping a single item

Yea Id have to agree that the druid is a better starting class.. a shaman is fun, but its REALLY fun if you can twink it out.. like you twink one out right and you can solo beast mode like a god to 60 and that power is just WAY too much fun to miss out on - So I would recommend playing one as a second class.

Not even going to entertain discussion about whats good/not good on Red because seriously like 5 ppl in the entire world care.
To OP: Shaman is better. They're not even in the same ballpark. Druid is cool for a port bot and potg/circles at high lvls. Good for PLing low lvl alts. That's really about it. One of the weaker classes in the game imo. Shaman on the other hand is arguably the most overpowered class in the game. In Velious they are uncontested best solo class in 99% of situations. They duo effectively with almost every class and are highly sought after for groups. My only minor complaint about the Shaman class is they don't stack very effectively in raids. You never really need more than a couple shamans on a raid and anything more than 1 is really just to spread out the buff load. However what others have said is true. Shaman are expensive to gear up and get all the important clickies and spells they need to be effective. Honestly though if I were you I'd just go with it. You can always get in a guild that can help you with your epic and that's the most important thing sub-60. Once 60 you'll want to get Torpor asap and that's going to be difficult but not impossible. Once again a decent guild should be able to help you out here. If you decide to go the Shaman route and need advice/tips hit me up in game and I'd be glad to help.
