Hey Redmage, - Welcome to P99! Mages are an excellent solo and group class, which makes it a very nice class for a starter. When you have some time, check out the Guild Talk forums to see which are recruiting for leveling. There are always groups going in Greater Faydark, which I highly recommend taking advantage of. Grouping will teach you about the game, the abilities that other classes present, and provide you with the ability to hunt in areas where you cannot solo. Also, make use of the wiki.project1999.com.
