The lack of artificial limitations. Always been my favorite thing about EQ.
Pretty much every mob/NPC is fair game to be killed / farmed. There is no level restrictions on loot - I can't stand how level restrictions on gear has become the norm as it makes itemization seem overly linear. YOU HAVE SO MANY CHOICES TO GET EXP WITHIN A SPECIFIC LEVEL RANGE! You're not restricted into the only level 9-19 zone with every single other player in that level range, you actually have options. There's no hidden mechanics that restricts the mobs you can kill - like if a mob is 4 levels above you you're pretty much unable to kill it (like WoW). If your tactics, gear, skill are good enough, and your class is capable, you can solo kill some very powerful mobs. It's funny, I always considered EQ more of a "sandbox" than most of the sandbox games out there right now. It isn't at all, but in a sense the lack of restrictions on the player makes the game feel more open and free than literally any other themepark MMO I've ever played.
