Correct me if i'm wrong, but I seem to remember bard mana song being pulse based, not tick based. As in, every time you see the graphic effect, you gain a little bit of mana - there is no actual buff icon for the spell. I don't remember being able to twist this song at all because you basically have to keep it on all by itself to get the full effect.
An archive.org lookup of castersrealm seems to say the same thing:
