It's not supposed to be like you report it. Reasons that i can think of:

1) You still have your first weapon and as mobs get more hp you are not used to long fights.

2) You had a bad streak or two, not doing much damage.

3) Some prankster group charmed and buffed noob mobs before releasing them (unlikely but possible)

The time between 4 and 8 is hard for all priests. You can't med yet, but you need mana to kill mobs fast enough. I would try to find groups, makes it easier.
