How bad is the gear gap currently . Does Kunark vp geared 60s stand any chance or is the game pretty much over unless you join empire?

If you play smart and get basic gear, you can still do fine. Geared characters still die. Plus, there is a ton of gear available in solo, group, and small raid content. I think the most important thing is to have a group of fellow players to play with.

You can still itemize well with out Velious raid gear and compete just fine.

In some ways velious makes it easier to get great gear.

As others have said fight with bravery and poise and you will kill many bad guys.
