This thread mostly seems to discuss solo and raid roles...perhaps that's a subtle indicator of the influence Warcraft has had on the online game space. EQ's primarily a grouping game. Anyhow, you don't want to make an Ogre? Then don't make an Ogre. MMOG players are notorious for obsessing over a couple percent of effectiveness here or there, or for claiming that some inconsequential bonus is somehow "necessary" (ex. Daldaen's post above).
Bringing the hyperbole and exaggeration back down to reality, here's what Shaman races actually boil down to: Barbarians level a little faster and have somewhat more convenient factions. Trolls/Iksars have a modest advantage prior to obtaining Torpor, which evaporates to almost nothing with that spell. Ogres have a slight advantage for high-end solo. All races can ultimately do the same jobs and solo the same things that all other races can without all that much difference in effectiveness. Danth

At max level the Troll regen is totally negligible, most shamans dump the fungi once they get Torpor. This topic has been debated more than any single subject on these forums.
Bottom line is Frontal Stun immunity is the single best racial bonus in the game. If a class can be an Ogre, it is the best choice. End of discussion.

Being an ogre you also have a very high str/sta which definitely help early on.
Also, a shrinked ogre shaman is adorable.

barby faction is kinda mute in velious.... so from this weekend, pick troll over barby imo. after a few months you will find, you want one shm that kills dragons and one that kills giants.....unless your already ubber and will live in tov/pom/sleepers all the time anyway!

Troll, -easiest leveling- to 50's hands down and only shaman that can snare solo, deep in a dungeon somewhere and it now stacks with root. I still use it when a resisted root/runner would mean death.
...and for thA tards, at lvl 60 it's +18 hps sitting, at 56 it's +1 more then a fungi.

I went troll shaman - don't regret it at all. I just hit 51 where the regen differences start to widen dramatically. 51 vs 50 (trolls get a 4hp/tick jump sitting and standing from 50 to 51) made a pretty big difference in available mana via canni. @ 51 it's 2 vs 6 regen standing; 5 vs 12 sitting. That's not a negligible difference, and the difference only gets wider. At 60 you get 8 more regen standing and 9 more sitting. At 51 it's basically an extra ikky regen bp permanently. At 60 it's nearly the same difference as upgrading that ikky bp to a fungi. For those of you barbs/ogres out there who finally got a regen bp or upgraded .... It's like that ... Except it stacks with said items.
Self buffed right now I'm at +21/+27 sit/stand with an ikky - and that's pretty nice. FSI is good, but regen imo is just too good to pass up on a class with mana mechanics like shamans. Yeah 60 and torpor changes things ... But once you get to that point you don't really need FSI anymore as the game is basically easy mode. Play what you want. I went troll for stats/regen (and I wanted to be ugly). I don't regret it at all. Regen makes leveling much easier. I'd argue it makes soloing for xp (not necessarily named hunting) a lot easier as well.
