Came at it with that "alternate reality" nonsense in the lore too from what I heard, so it could distance itself from #1.
I liked/laughed but also hated at the fact that if someone died in your group in early EQ2 the whole group took an XP hit for it, less severe but you can imagine the tears.
That got changed real quick.
