I would not recommend Enc/Cleric as a duo to start at level 1. It might be good at high level, but the synergy isn't there pre-50. When charm is cheap and short duration and haste is weak.. it makes far more sense to grab fresh pets instead of negating half of charm's natural dps by healing the old one. You'll have to slog through 40-50 levels of mediocrity before getting any kind of payoff from the combo(if you ever get there).
If I were doing a fun duo with a friend without a specific end goal, my first choice would be Warrior and Druid, preferably both Halfling. It won't win any Min/Max awards for End Game Effectiveness(tm), but it's fun and they play off each other from the very first login. Having a druid makes your duo largely self-sufficient. You aren't tied to one specific combat style. And absolutely any other class can be added to the mix if you come across other people you want to group with for a bit.
