Hello All,

I've decided to play EQ again for fun, and figured I'd be a masochist by doing so on the red server.
I'd like to start a caster as my first character. Necros are my favorite flavor wise, but I keep seeing people on these forums say that Enchanters would make the best starting class, with 0 gear. I'd be soloing 99% of the time, due to my schedule.
I don't remember enchanters being all that amazing at soloing at low or mid levels. Is there something that has changed? What makes them the best farming class?

Thank You
OP, most classic enc grouped because they were so well-desired for their mana in groups which were plentiful back then. It was just the path of least resistance. I don't recall many brave souls attempting to solo but the potential was there, or arguably even better than p99.

Short video below is example of what you may expect grinding ~lv 17 with no gear.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nx6jIkTYWnI

There are certain tricks that were overlooked in this video. For example, using taper enchantment instead of invis to break charm... although this requires you to be dangerously close to mobs if you don't have speed.... also highly recommend investing some of your first plats into sow pots instead of going without speed like in video.

Pons is 60 now and am happy to give you in-game tips and assistance. Can also help with some easy items like rod of insidious glamour, crude stein, moggok, incandescent gloves/mask.. can get you some of them sow pots too. Most of this is at no cost to me other than some time.

Send me a pm or /tell ingame, been lookin for a young sire to help out.

edit: fyi i solo'ed practically the entire game 1-60. some xp groups took place 56+ but weren't needed. have a solid list of grind spots especially since ive leveled encs on p99 several times now.

I want to commend you for starting red. Norrath needs people with intestinal fortitude.

I hear people describe enchanters as dungeon crawlers and shamans as big game hunters.

Enchanter was my first toon on Red. I had rags, and soloed my way to 24 before buying my first piece of gear. Also, for just about anything all you require as a chanter is Charisma. And charisma gear is super cheap. Took no time at all to get to 24, and following the bronze got me enough for 200 charisma, all you really need. Just look at the wiki and follow the make money while you level guide. Also check out the enchanter guides. I highly recommend you go agnostic. Once you get illusions, you can go anywhere and be amiable most places.

Of course, if you want to group that is great too, even more xp. Groups will be glad to have you. Be warned though, enchanter isn't a laid back class.

Well, I decided on a human (I'm so exciting) enchanter named Tvesh. If you see me, say hi [You must be logged in to view images. Log in or Register.]
Or stab me in the back...either way [You must be logged in to view images. Log in or Register.]

Enchanter is by far the best at farming but also requires the highest skill to play. Necromancer is by far an easier class to farm/solo with, also with almost the same power as an enchanter. I'd say necromancer for a first toon unless you've got the skill and patience.

Enchanters are not in any way terrible at PVP. I'd argue they may be the best PVP class.

Not worse than mage. So not worst in PvP.
