Not an IT professional, but a longtime nerd. Hmm, you say this problem is especially bad online? What do you mean, in a browser or just when you're using a program which uses the internet?

If I was you, I'd be using different programs doing the same thing with the mouse to see if the same behavior reproduces itself. I'd also try to shut off the computer, flip the power supply switch off (if it has one) and unplug the mouse and leave it unplugged for a minute, then plug it back in and turn the power on. I know that sounds weird, but once or twice I've seen similar with computers I've used.

You need to establish where the problem is coming from. If there's another computer in the house you may try to connect the mouse you're using to that and see if the problems continue. If they continue, the mouse is getting old or defective. Less likely, it's not supported well in the drivers.

In all my years, most mouse problems get fixed by replacing the mouse.

And anytime you have a problem with input/etc... you might also consider the keyboard. Sometimes keys get stuck and can cause problems. To fix just press every key and hopefully the stuck key becomes unstuck.

Does this sound like a virus to you guys?
Not particularly. My first guess would be that you got the shit end of the stick when it came to your mouse's quality. As another person suggested, try plugging in a different mouse if you've got one around to see if the problem persists. If it's a USB mouse, try using a different USB port if you haven't already.

Does it start out completely fine and then gradually get worse the longer you use the computer? It may be a mouse buffer problem if that's the case.

Shot in the dark: Is it a logitech mouse that looks like this? http://imgur.com/iE3Vvke They're pretty notorious for deteriorating like that.

Hmm, maybe turning down some of your mouse sensitivity settings may help? Although I'd bet the post above me might be a little more on spot: it's probably a fluke lack of quality in hardware. If you want to try turning your mouse sensitivity settings down:

1. hit start button
2.open "computer" or "my computer" (depending on Windows version)
3.Click "Open Control Panel"
[You must be logged in to view images. Log in or Register.]
4. Click on the "mouse" option
5. Mess with these options (ex. double click speed).

If else I'd say make sure your mouse driver is up to date as these things may come with tools to adjust your mouse as well

If none of this helps or seems like its going to help I'd recommend a Logitech m310, cheap good wireless and itll work for at least a year (I have 3 that have all worked fine for over 2.5 years now) costs $30 or less plug and play on Windows/Linux/Mac.

As was already said multiple times. try a different mouse. if you dont experience the problematic behavior described in OP than your original mouse is busted.

if not ur pc has stuxnet, godspeed.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I tried updating the drivers for the mouse. That helped a little, but it's still taking 3, 4, 5 tries to highlight things, and sometimes by mouse seems to "click" an item or icon while simply dragging the cursor near it. I'll try to find my old mouse tonight and swap it out and see what happens. Currently using a Razor Deathadder that I picked up a few months ago from Amazon, hoping it hasn't died already.

Back to the virus/spyware/malware scanner/removal. Just as a side note, are there any good, effective, free, and relatively simple to use ones out there that you guys suggest?

I did some reading since I haven't used free stuff in a while (I pay for ESET Smart Security, which is very nice) and it looks like Bitdefender, Panda Free Antivirus, and Malwarebytes are all pretty good. I used to use Malwarebytes quite often for my antivirus needs and it was super easy to use.

Keep us updated on what happens. A few google searches have shown people with problems similar to yours after only 3 months or so of use. You should be able to get a replacement from Razer if you contact them, at least.

Razer Deathadder. There are a lot of known problems with that mouse.

Now it might just be your batteries dying, or shitty signal

but probably one of the many hardware issues frequently encountered by people who use these mice. while researching for a new mouse I read a few problems about the Razer mice.

I was doing that first fix for my nagas. After about 3 months of cleaning the switches, you have to start taking it apart each week
