Default Pet taking 50% xp

Does anyone know how damage shields and 3rd party damage effect this?

AFAIK, DS damage is considered "nuetral" damage, meaning if a mob dies by ONLY the damage from DS, there is no experience granted. You or your pet has to do at least 1 damage to receive the experience.

Send in fire pet, let the DS and his melee do the work, recall pet once mob is < 5% HP, kill with low level nuke, receive full experience.

DS is neutral.

DS does 100 DMG
Pet does 40 DMG
You do 60 DMG

You would get full EXP. Since 60 > 40.

Also, any pet damage is wiped away when the pet dies or is reclaimed.

Pet does 180 DMG
Pet dies
You do 20 DMG

You would again get full EXP.

I'm guessing healing your pet doesn't count for anything?

What if

pet does 80 dmg
I do 20 dmg
pet dies
new pet does 25 dmg
mob dies

or

pet does 80 dmg
I do 20 dmg
pet dies
new pet does 15 dmg
mob dies

Will i loose 50% in both cases?

You would only lose 50% in the first case.

Would it be better to us the Earth pet, cause he does less spell dmg at lvl 4. So your exp will not be taken from you. I'm new to the pet class so just asking.

IDK, I would think the L4 pets are such beasts against L2-5 mobs that you would level faster just killing things non-stop, ensuring your character does >1dmg and letting the pet do the rest. This will slow down as you level, but L4-8 or 12 should be fast enough even with the pet eating 50% exp.

I know the pet XP penalty sucks for a Mage. And when it first went in I was pissed as heck and stopped playing my Mage for 6 months I bet.

But I have been playing it a lot both Solo and Grouped. Grouped there is no pet Penalty. But even Solo they kill so fast compared to ANY other class I just let the Fire pet kill, kill, kill. Get the Focus Item for it. All of them for that matter if u can. Use the Air pet in groups, never the Earth pet unless YOU are the Tank lol. Like a duo, trio thingy.

Stay out of Kunark zones, mobs have tons more Hp, and just go to like Oasis of Marr when you are high enough, like level 12, and just kill harder and harder Crocs and don't worry about the penalty. They level quick even being gimped like they are. [You must be logged in to view images. Log in or Register.]
