Can't believe no one mentioned enchanter.

Clerics can heal better than anyone, so that's your strength up through late game. Probably through your 20s, the cleric can serve as a passable tank as well, and with stuns will have no problem keeping aggro if he wants it. That opens up every melee path to you. Or, as noted, you could have a pet take damage.

For 40+ dungeon content, Cleric/Enchanter is arguably the best duo in the game. Between CH, Rez, and cleric buffs, and enchanter charm/mana regen/haste/slow, you two are a machine.

Most melee/priest duos tend to use a shaman instead of a cleric, because of access to slows and haste, as well as shaman buffs, epic dot, pet dps, and canni for regen. Cleric and a melee would work, just not as well as a shaman/melee combo. IE, much more downtime, and more limited mob selection.

Shaman and Cleric don't stack well because you lack dps. Sure, with slow and complete heal, nothing will kill you easily....but you've got no real crowd control, and no real dps. So if your brother plans to stick with a dwarf cleric, and you are flexible, I'd recommend thinking about enchanter > necro > mage > bard, which all have more interesting DPS options. Or even druid if you plan to stay outdoors.

I have grouped with plenty of necromancers. They've a lot of utility to offer in even a full group. Most people you encounter will not care much what class you are so long as you play it well. There are of course those though who will take issue with it, but in my experience those are a small minority and I cannot say I've heard a specific complaint about necromancere in that regard. Most irrational hatred is reserved for hybrids (though still uncommon) ^^
Unfortunately there is some necro hate. Yes, tons of utility - but just this last weekend I was lfg on my necro in City of Mist and was told sorry, I was not wanted because mobs die too fast for my dots to kick in. I was like - ...

We have nukes, pet damage, can heal people other than MT (and top them off as needed), have crowd control (screaming terror is awesome, we have root too). We don't dot in groups unless it's a duo and we're killing slowly enough for them.

I know - why play a solo class if I don't want to solo? Because I like the class and I don't want to solo.
