Forgive my ignorance on this.... I just got the Broom. I only get the "Broom Glows" message if it is equipped. Does this change with lvls or does it always have to be equipped when summoning?

I remember always having to have it equipped to summon, but then you can remove it until you have to resummon again.

The reclaim energy clicky is handy for using a mage to powerlevel as well (yes, it is done sometimes)

Does anyone know how much the staffs of elemental mastery raise the 50+ pets? Like the 54 water pet max hits for 56. Does the staff of elemental mastery water make it hit harder? If so by how much?

Staff of elemental mastery actually increase the level of the pet (contrary to the other ones) and do boost max damage and spell effect. Staff of fire mastery for instance will boost the max damage by 2 but also the DD and DS of the pet (a 49 focused pet could hit up to 48, have a DS of 44 etc...).
At least that's what happens with my staff of Fire Mastery, I haven't got the other ones (anyone got an spare Earth? [You must be logged in to view images. Log in or Register.]) but I see no reason why they would work differently.

I don't know why people try to sell the Fire pet focus to everyone saying it's by far the most useful and best level 49 minus.
Plain and simple: (talking about focused fire vs focused water) It does 1 more dmg DD wise compared to the water. It has a LOT less HP than the water pet. Soloing OR in a group the focused water pet out weighs a fire by lot and it is due to it's HP. Also, if your pet needs to tank something for a bit for the group, water owns it! The extra HP is great. Stein is by far the BEST focused item for a mage that is level 49 or less. Moving on... NOW, air is best for grouping in my opinion because of the stun alone. I think it's in a mages best interest to get ALL focus items, because they are all useful. I just felt the need to respond to all this talk about how the torch focus is the best ever and nothing else is needed for a mage that isn't level 50+. I JUST got 'A Torch' drop (first drop for me) today. I am happy about it, but I would rather have a stein. Either way I'll keep farming for them.

The reason why the fire pet is good is becuase of the DS it has not the DD. The damage from the DS is neutral damage so its possible to actually out damage the pet and your not using mana casting a shitty DS on a pet.
As for other pets it just depends. Water is best in a group thats fighting no casters. Air for casters. Earth if you have no CC and need a tank.

Currently only lvl 21 Mage...
The fire pet with the focus item is the best for me. The Damage Shield lets the enemy chew through themselves very quickly. With the focus item, I can send him in on a Dark Blue con and he will win - the extra hp keeps him alive. I can either heal him, or resummon after the fight. I prefer to keep him alive to save on regents.... I don't do the reclaim kill for full xp because I am lazy. Plus I can kill so fast with the focus pet right now, I don't see the need.
