It might be that...and hear me out here, that he didn't spend 100% of his time trying to accumulate the most platinum as humanly possible, and actually tried enjoying the game occasionally. He was also in a hardcore raiding guild which I'd assume requires a large time commitment. There is also a good possibility he might have had a lot of platinum/items still left in his hoard when his accounts were banned. etc
