It wasn't just enchs afraid of charm either--I remember most groups getting upset if you charmed something while grouped. I remember clerics getting so mad they would refuse to heal me.
Charm soloing was harder back in 2000 though, partly because it was new, but also due to lag. You just couldn't depend on the very touchy timings and reflexes that are possible today. Today I can position myself 12 units of distance from my pet and land a root at acharm break before he closesthe distance. Then I can recharm and dispel root and send him back in all in one quick motion and without tye need ror rune, stun, or getting hit.
This was just impossible back on the old internet with my 3dfx card. Imagine all your abilities being about 500ms more unreliable and these feats of extreme enchanting look a lot less possible.
Necros managed it, but ench has less room for error.
