A badly played wizard can fill a spot in a group as a random damage class, but the stigma that all wizards are afk leeches is misguided. They exist, but you should easily be able to tell the difference between a good and a bad wizard.

Knowing what we now know about the game, shamans starting with kunark are by far the most powerful solo and group contrib class in the game by a very wide margin. Kunark introduced the >50% slows that became the gamechangers.
Don't ever remember wizards being high on any list. rangers not until they upped their ranged damage which was very late in the cycle. the bottom three were necro ranger wizard second necro because necro crap didn't stack. rangers got hate because they are strong below 30. they get much weaker later, but everyone's impressions are formed early. The worst player so far on this server that I have encountered has been a Enchanter who must have soloed his way up. He rooted before mez, I mean after the pull he roots. This is a single pull. So we are tanking, me and two monks. I could get hate but then he roots, and the mob turns, then mez. By the time the root breaks he goes for the chanter.
When we say don't root, mez adds only, he rage dumps the group. I am playing a ranger. In classic the conventional wisdom puts me near the bottom and him near the top. Some classes are fool proof, but not for professional fools.
